Grilled Mackerel with Gooseberry Sauce Recipe

Grilled Mackerel with Gooseberry Sauce Recipe from


½ lb fresh gooseberries

½ oz butter

1 oz sugar

pinch ground nutmeg

lemon juice

salt and pepper



 1. To make the sauce place the fruit in a pan and cook to a soft pulp with the butter

2. Rub the fruit through a sieve, then stir in the sugar, salt and pepper, nutmeg and the lemon juice before serving

3. Meanwhile prepare the fish, one medium fish per person. Make sure fish has been gutted. Make three diagonal scores through the thick part on either side of the fish using a sharp knife

4. Brush the fish with a little melted butter and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Cook the mackerel on a buttered grill pan under a slow grill for approx 20 minutes, turn once or twice and rebrush with butter each time. Serve with the gooseberry sauce
